WJ's Living Fully approach has changed the way our clients view money and the way our advisors navigate conversations. By investing time in understanding each client’s financial purpose, we go "beyond wealth" to focus on what truly matters. We would like to share with you our "why" and the purpose that drives WJ advisors to be deeply invested in your financial future. First, we will place the spotlight on Jonathan Chapman, Partner and Senior Wealth Advisor, to share his personal "why."
What is your financial purpose?
My personal statement of financial purpose is to use financial success to create security, freedom and opportunity, both for my family and for others. I believe money is not something we own but something we are entrusted to manage wisely. True financial success lies in stewardship, the responsible care of resources that bless those around us. My hope is that the legacy I leave reflects that true wealth is measured not by accumulation, but by faithful stewardship marked by integrity, generosity, and a life lived with intention.
Why did you become a wealth advisor?
I became a wealth advisor because I saw early on what it looks like to work hard your entire life and still not experience true financial freedom. Growing up in a rural town, I spent my early years doing tough manual labor like roofing, mowing lawns, digging trenches, hauling hay, remodeling/carpentry work all in the Texas summer heat, and I saw too many people work until they died because they had to, not because they wanted to. I became determined to learn a better way and to help others avoid that path. Later, while interning at a large pension fund doing investment analysis, I realized I enjoyed the technical side of investing but felt too far removed from what I enjoyed most, working with and serving people. A mentor then introduced me to wealth management as a career where I could pair analysis with real relationships.
Today, I feel a strong sense of responsibility to the business owners and families I serve, knowing firsthand the sacrifice, risk, and effort that goes into building something meaningful. It bothers me to see avoidable, compounding mistakes like poor planning, rushed exits, bad tax decisions, or unused wealth at the end of a life. Those types of mistakes quietly erode the rewards of a lifetime of work. My belief in stewardship and generosity shapes how I advise. I don’t believe dying with a large pile of money is success. That is essentially the equivalent to having worked for free for those leftover dollars. Instead, I want clients to Live Fully, to live and give to their heart’s desire, with intention, throughout their lives. That’s why our firm emphasizes comprehensive planning over products, thoughtful exit and succession planning for business owners, and a transparent, fee-only model where we are paid solely by our clients. My hope is that, after decades together, clients can say they were guided with integrity and care, and that their wealth was aligned with their values, their purpose, and the people and causes they love.
Describe your values. What matters most to you?
My personal core values are Integrity, Generosity and what I call the 3 “Be’s”: Be Brilliant in the Basics, Be Intentional, Be a Sponge. My financial purpose drives me to live and lead with integrity, generosity, and the continual pursuit of personal growth. Integrity means keeping my word, doing what I say I’ll do, and earning the trust of those who depend on me. Generosity is the natural outflow of gratitude, using resources to bless others and make a tangible difference. I strive to be brilliant in the basics, disciplined in my craft, and excellent in execution. I aim to be intentional in every decision, ensuring resources, time, and effort always align with purpose and principle. I will remain a sponge, eager to learn from people, experiences, and wisdom that challenge me to grow as a steward and servant leader.
What makes you unique?
What makes me unique as an advisor is the combination of my lived experience, my conviction about stewardship, and the way my values shape how I work with and serve clients. I grew up doing real, hard manual labor and later served as a Marine Corps officer, experiences that forged discipline and a deep sense of responsibility when people’s lives and futures depended on my decisions. Those seasons cemented my belief that money is something we’re entrusted to manage, not own, and I believe dying with a pile of wealth is poor stewardship, not success, so I focus on helping clients Live Fully by living and giving with intention throughout their lives. My personal core values of Integrity, Generosity, and the three Be’s (Be Brilliant in the Basics, Be Intentional, Be a Sponge), show up in a planning first, exit focused approach and in my commitment to keep learning so I can better serve business owners and the families I work with. Others can try to offer similar services or even sound similar, but they can’t replicate my specific story, my service as a Marine, my convictions, or the way I consistently align advice with these principles over time.
How do you give back in the community?
I give back to the community by investing deeply in organizations that support youth, families, and the long-term health of Fort Bend County. As a past President and current Board Member of Parks Youth Ranch, I’ve helped serve at-risk and homeless youth by supporting safe shelter, counseling, and resources that give them a chance to rewrite their stories. I’ve also served on the Board of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and completed both the Fort Bend Chamber Leadership Forum and the Leadership for Nonprofit Excellence program, which strengthened my ability to contribute at a strategic level to local nonprofits and civic initiatives. In addition, I stay involved through the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association (Gulf Coast Chapter) and as a Board Member for Fort Bend County MUD No. 237, where I can help influence quality of life and responsible stewardship close to home. For me, giving back isn’t a side activity, it’s an extension of my belief in stewardship, using my time, experience, and resources to help my community thrive.
